Bittersweet - Track 13

Bighorn Sheep

From Alaska to Arizona
I been stubbin my toe’n I
Haven’t learned a damn thing yet

From Idaho to Florida
Like a maple seed I’ve spun
Spirali...i...in' downwind

From Washington to Indiana
On two lane roads I’ve spent a
Million nights drivin’ high beam

Headin’ for a fool’s glory
To the next hiccup in my story
Am I runnin’ from or chasin’ my dreams

And people been good right a long
This should have been a happy song
They gave me hope again and again

Oh, they hugged me close and held me high
If I stumbled they caught me every time
How can I ever thank them

Cause mostly I don’t even know
Where they are or how they go
What kind of friend have I been

In Colorado I worked the mine
Up Leadville way in winter time
Till silver crashed and I’m back down the road

I worked the woods and punched the cows
Was a ditchrider on irrigation canals
Stacked the boards at a small sawmill

Pulled rotten spuds off conveyor belts
Poured concrete where homes were built
Sold paint 'n bolts 'n such at the hardware place

Took up social work with the Eskimos
Helped the hurting in their homes
Even pumped gas in the full service days

And people been good right a long
This should have been a happy song
They gave me hope again and again

Oh, they hugged me close and held me high
If I stumbled they caught me every time
How can I ever thank them

Cause mostly I don’t even know
Where they are or how they go
What kind of friend have I been

Yes, ladies I’ve know hither and yon
Bless their hearts every one
Such sad delusions did we wend

Well, I tried and they tried
But never at the same time
Socks on a rooster in the end

Pick up mercury with your fingertips
Catch a fly with chopsticks
Hold a moonbeam in your hand

Stop the shifting desert dunes
Make a baby not “Goo, goo”
See me and a woman content

And people been good right a long
This should have been a happy song
They gave me hope again and again

Oh, they hugged me close and held me high
If I stumbled they caught me every time
How can I ever thank them

Cause mostly I don’t even know
Where they are or how they go
What kind of friend have I been

What kind of friend have I been What kind of friend...
